craftpagan @ : For my husband's birthday
This is something I recently made for my hubby. He's not really Buddhist, but has serious spiritual leanings in that direction, so I made him a set of Mala beads and a bag to put them in.

I wanted to use natural materials at least for the beads, and I mostly succeeded. The accent beads are some type of poly-resin, I think, they were in an assorted bag of other beads. To set them off, I used little metal spacers. The bulk of the beads are wooden, and a bit larger than most prayer beads that I've seen. I chose them to be a bit larger, because my husband has larger hands, and I figured they'd be easier for him to handle. They are strung on red hemp cord, which is what I used at the end to make the tassel.
The fabric of the bag has a dragon on one side, a phoenix on the other. Both of these creatures are spiritually important for my husband, so I felt it was appropriate. I forgot to take a picture of the inside. This type of fabric is so pretty on the back, that I made the bag fully reversible. The cords I braided from embroidery floss to match the fabric.
I cleansed all of the materials beforehand, and chanted while I worked,
'Om Mani Padme Hum' (translation: 'Hail the jewel in the lotus')
This is a powerful mantra for enlightenment and protection, so I felt it was also appropriate. :)
